Settings: Operation

In EPLAN, you define settings separately for the Project, User, Workstation, and Company categories. All settings are made or changed in a central location in the program, independent of the category, and are managed in separate databases with the file name extension .xdb. Access to the databases is effected via a separate file for each database which has the file name extension .xlk. The individual databases and access files are stored in the shared CFG configuration directory of the local workstation, or on a server volume in the case of a network based installation.

Note:

You can actually access many settings through a separate module-specific settings dialog. The settings defined there, however, are of local significance and will overwrite other project-wide settings.

Project-specific settings

In the project-specific settings you define all the properties of a project. The project-specific settings are subdivided according to electronic functions.
You can make all project-specific settings from a single dialog, even when the settings apply to different modules.

Default standard values are provided by the program for project-specific settings, which you can modify and save with the project. The program loads these project-specific settings when you, or another user, opens the project. This occurs independently of the workstation where each user is working. The user-specific settings are managed in a database with the designation PROJECT.<program version>.xdb. Access to the database is effected via the file PROJECT.<program version>.xlk.

User-specific settings

The user-specific settings allows you to define the working environment of a user. You can thus tune the functionality of the program to suit your working methods, or those of other users.

When a user logs onto a workstation with their user name and starts the program, then the program reads a user name from the operating system. The program then loads the user-specific settings for this user, regardless of which workstation the user is working from.

If several users work at the same workstation, the program only makes the settings for each specific user available.

The user-specific settings are managed in a database with the designation USER.<program version>.<user name>.xdb. Access to the database is effected via the file USER.<program version>.<user name>.xlk.

Workstation-specific settings

You define the workplace using the workstation-specific settings.
The workstation information is read from the operating system by the program. The workstation-specific settings are managed in a database with the designation STATION.<program version>.<station name>.xdb. Access to the database is effected via the file STATION.<program version>.<station name>.xlk.

The workstation-specific settings are stored on the workstation. Every user working with this workstation can create or change the settings.

Company-specific settings

The company-specific settings allow you to define company-wide settings that apply to all workstations.
The company-specific settings are managed in a database with the designation COMPANY.<program version>.<company name>.xdb. Access to the database is effected via the file COMPANY.<program version>.<company name>.xlk.
The company information is read from the operating system by the program. If you have entered a company name into the operating system, then this is used for the file name. If you have not defined a company name in the operating system then the program uses the name COMPANY.Basic.xlk.
