In mechanical design a chamfer is a straight line which connects two linear, non-parallel elements. The original elements can be trimmed (shortened or extended). A distinction is made between a symmetrical chamfer and an asymmetrical chamfer. A symmetrical chamfer is obtained if the original elements are trimmed by an equal amount (chamfer width). In the 3D view, chamfering generates uniform chamfers at edges, corners or internal openings (e.g., drill holes).
