A multilingual input is possible for many properties and entry fields in the project or parts management. Such multilingual texts can be translated automatically or manually.
Identification of multilingual input fields
In the User settings for the user interface you specify whether multilingual input fields are identified with a prefixed icon. You can selectively identify all multilingual input fields, only those that can be edited or skip the identification all together. If no icon is displayed for a field, even if the Always show icons option is activated, this is not a multilingual field.

The contents of the field are language-dependent. In this case the Remove translation popup menu item is active. |
Language dependence of texts
If you enter a text into a multilingual field it is initially language-neutral. This means the text is not assigned to a language and is displayed - as it was entered - independently of the selected source language.
For a translation the text is assigned to the current source language and to a language-dependent text.
Automatic Translation
- You have activated the Translate on input option in the translation settings. Texts in multilingual fields then become language-dependent immediately during the input.
- You perform a translation run, for example via the menu items Utilities > Translation > Translate. In the process all multilingual properties and texts (for example "free texts") that are selected in the scope of the translation are translated. Language-neutral texts are assigned to the current source language and are subsequently language-dependent.
Manual Translation
- You open the Multilingual input dialog via the popup menu and then click [OK]. The text is assigned to the current source language and is language-dependent. This happens irrespectively of whether you have actually assigned a translation text to the text or leave the dialog without changes.
- You translate an individual text via the popup menu item Translate.
Notes:
- With the Remove translation popup menu item you can reconvert a language-dependent text into a language-neutral text.
- With the Mark text as 'Excluded from translation' popup menu item you can exclude a text from the translation.
