Dialog Settings: General (Project, Translation)

In this dialog you specify the method and translation language that the project texts for the current project should be translated. The translation and display settings are project-specific. This way you can edit projects with different settings at one workstation.

Languages:

This field contains all of the languages into which the project texts are to be translated. Use the buttons above the field to add or delete languages.

Source language:

In this field, you specify the project source language. This is the language in which you enter your project texts. The project source language is simultaneously the translation source language. When translating, EPLAN searches the dictionary for suitable keywords for this language and translates them into all the selected translation languages. From the drop-down list you can select either the dialog language or a language that you have already set as the translation language. If the ##_## (dialog language) option is selected, the source language is automatically matched to the dialog language currently set in EPLAN. You also use the source language to specify the language in which translatable project texts are displayed in dialogs. This does not apply to the graphical editor. In this case you use the displayed languages to specify which languages are visible. The source language can be selected as the displayed language, but does not have to be.

Example:

You have an appropriate dictionary with keywords in the source language en_US and the corresponding translation texts in the languages fr_FR, zh_CN, ru_RU. You have defined the following settings:

You enter your project texts in English, because you have selected en_US as the source language, and translate your project. All project texts are translated into the languages fr_FR, zh_CN, and ru_RU. They already exist in en_US.

Graphical editor: Here the project texts are only displayed in the languages zh_CN and ru_RU.
Dialogs: Here the translatable project texts, such as page descriptions in the page navigator, are displayed in the source language of the project, i.e. en_US.

Note:

The source language is automatically the data entry language for project texts. The data entry language is also displayed in the EPLAN status bar when entering text.

Translate on input:

If the check box is selected, then texts, page properties, project properties and device properties are translated automatically on input with the entries from the dictionary. If no translation text is found in the dictionary, the text is left language-neutral. In this case the text is always displayed in the source language in which it was entered, regardless of the specified dialog language.

If the check box is deselected, then text is not translated when entered. You can perform a translation run to translate text later. The page must be selected for page properties to be translated in a translation run. The project must be selected for project properties to be translated in a translation run.

Match case:

Behavior in automatic translation:

EPLAN searches for a matching keyword in the dictionary for every project text to be translated or replaced. If the check box is selected, EPLAN finds the matching keyword only if the upper and lower case in the text exactly matches with the upper and lower case of the keyword in the dictionary.

If the check box is deselected, the project text and the keyword will not be case-sensitive. This increases the number of keywords that are found.

Behavior in manual translation:

This function has no effect on manual translation.

Change translated texts:

Behavior in automatic translation:

If this check box is selected then already translated text is retranslated and overwritten. This function is significant if you want to revise already translated texts using other translation texts.

If this check box is deselected then already translated text is not retranslated and not overwritten. This prevents already translated texts from being modified.

Behavior in manual translation:

This function has no effect on manual translation. In manual translation, already translated texts are generally retranslated and overwritten.

Manual selection for terms with multiple meanings:

Behavior in automatic translation:

If the check box is selected, EPLAN provides word suggestions for words with multiple meanings in the dictionary. You can then manually select a word from the suggested options.

If the check box is deactivated, EPLAN does not make any word suggestions, but determines translation text automatically on the basis of any translation already existing. If no suitable translation is found by this method, the first word from the keyword list of the dictionary is used.

Tip:

You can use the language "yy_XX" in order to define unique IDs for the translation. If this language is used as the source language, the ID can always be used to find a unique translation.

Behavior in manual translation:

This function has no effect on manual translation. In manual translation, existing word suggestions are always displayed.

Segment:

In this field you specify how the program searches for a translation text of an entry in the dictionary and how texts are output in the missing-word list. In general, punctuation such as the . (period), ! (exclamation mark), and ? (question mark) combined with a space are interpreted as end of sentence characters. These characters may therefore not be positioned at the end of a keyword in the dictionary.

Word: If this option is selected, the program first searches for a translation text in the dictionary as a complete sentence. If EPLAN does not find a suitable translation text in the dictionary for the sentence, it searches for a translation text for each word. EPLAN then breaks down any adjacent texts into words if, for example, empty spaces, line breaks, or punctuation marks occur. If EPLAN does not find one word of the sentence in the dictionary, the entire sentence will not be translated. A translation segment is output in the missing-word list for each individual word.

Sentence: If this option is selected, the program searches for a translation text in the dictionary as a complete sentence. If EPLAN does not find a suitable translation text for the sentence in the dictionary, the sentence will not be translated. Translation as a whole sentence is advisable if you want to ensure that the context of words that belong together is not lost. If missing translations are output as a whole sentence in the missing-word list, they can be translated more easily. A translation segment is output for each sentence in the missing-word list.

Entire entry: If this option is selected, the program searches for a suitable translation text in the dictionary for the entire entry of a text field. The punctuation marks . (period), ! (exclamation mark), and ? (question mark) are not treated as end of sentence characters when they appear in text. This option can be used, for example, for abbreviations having a period. The period may not be positioned at the end of the keyword. A translation segment is output for each entry in the missing-word list. These words are also included in the export and marked "Do not translate".

Additional word separators:

Through the entry of the characters "-" or "/" combined words that contain this word separator can be separated additionally during the generation of the missing-word list. This field is available if the setting Word is specified in the Segment field.

Line breaks: Text-based:

This check box is available if the setting Word is selected in the Segment field. If the check box is selected, then the positions of the line breaks in the translations are subject to the position in the original text.
The check box is not selected by default. In this case, EPLAN considers the word length of the source text and puts the line break at an appropriate point in the translated text. Separators in the translation of a particular keyword are considered for a possible line break position. A space, a hyphen, or a separator suggestion in the dictionary count as separators here.

Example:

You have set en_US as the source and displayed language for a project. French (fr_FR) is defined as the translation and second displayed language. The project texts input as examples here, clearly show how these texts are displayed in the schematic, subject to the selected setting after translation:

Upper-/lower-case letters:

Here you determine the writing style in which source and translation texts are to be output. At the "All ..." options both the source texts and the translation texts are modified. At the "Translation ..." options only the translation texts are modified - the writing style of the source texts remains unchanged.

Translation according to dictionary: The upper-/lower-case letters in the output translation texts correspond to the upper-/lower-case letters in the translation texts in the dictionary.
Translation in upper-case letters: The translation texts are output in upper-case letters. This makes it easy to differentiate between the original and translation languages.
Translation in lower-case letters: The translation texts are output in lower-case letters.
Translation first letters upper-case: The translation texts are output as in the dictionary. In addition the first letter is upper-case. If the "Entire entry" option is selected in the Segment field, only the first letter of the entire entry is written in upper-case letters. Otherwise every sentence begins with an upper case letter.
All according to dictionary: The upper-/lower-case letters in the source texts and translated texts correspond to the upper-/lower-case letters of the texts in the dictionary.
All upper-case letters: The source texts and translation texts are output in upper-case letters.
All lower-case letters: The source texts and translation texts are output in lower-case letters.
All first letters upper-case: The source texts and translation texts are output as in the dictionary. In addition the first letter is upper-case. If the "Entire entry" option is selected in the Segment field, only the first letter of the entire entry is written in upper-case letters. Otherwise every sentence begins with an upper case letter.

Group box Display

Languages:

In this field you specify the languages and sequence in which translatable project texts are displayed in the graphical editor. You can select either the dialog language or other languages that you have already set as translation languages as the displayed languages. The source language can be selected as the displayed language, but does not have to be. If the ##_## (dialog language) option is selected, then the displayed language of the project is automatically matched to the dialog language currently set in EPLAN. This functionality is useful, for example, if you want to pass a multilingual project on to others who open this project in EPLAN with a different dialog language.

The is the default setting for all translatable project texts in the graphical editor. For individual texts you can also specify just one displayed language by selecting the text and then using Popup menu > Properties > Format tab to select the One language (variable) option for the Format > Language property.

One language (variable):

Here you select the display language for translated project texts for which you have assigned the "One language (variable)" property. This is done in the graphical editor by selecting Popup menu > Properties > Format tab, property Format > Language. You can select from all of the translation languages that you have specified in the Translation group box.

##_## (dialog language): If this option is selected, the displayed language of the project is adapted automatically in the dialog language that is currently set in EPLAN. This functionality is useful, for example, if you want to pass a multilingual project on to others who open this project in EPLAN with a different dialog language.
Displayed language 1 ... Displayed language 5: If this option is activated (for example "Displayed language 1"), the monolingual texts are displayed in the language that is specified first, second, etc. displayed language. Depending on the settings for the number of displayed languages up to five entries are possible here.

Missing translation:

EPLAN accesses entries in the dictionary to translate project texts. If entries are missing in the dictionary, EPLAN cannot find keywords, or the translation texts for all of the texts. This function allows EPLAN to show a message for texts that cannot be translated. If you select the Display check box, you can enter an information text in the Text field. This text is shown everywhere in the Graphical editor that EPLAN can't translate a text. If you select this check box and do not enter a reminder text, then a line feed character is output as text. This way you can recognize that a translation language is missing for translated texts.
