Dialog Settings: Automatic cable selection

In this dialog you define the settings for the automatic cable selection and save this as a scheme.

Overview of the main dialog elements:

Scheme:

Select the scheme that you wish to use or edit from the drop-down list. You can also use the adjacent toolbar for this purpose.

Table Cable preselection

In parts selection, you can create a preselection list of cable types. Only the cables from this list will be used for automatic cable selection.

Toolbar:

Button

Meaning

(New)

Opens the Part selection dialog. The selected part is added to the preselection list.

(Edit)

Opens the Part selection dialog. The selected part replaces the marked part in the preselection list.

(Delete)

Deletes an entry from the list.

/ (Move up / down)

Moves an entry up / down in the list.

In the table, you can enhance or change the default value taken from the parts management for each cable type. When automatically selecting cables, EPLAN searches for the suitable cable in parts management. The voltage entered for the cable, the voltage of the cable connections (defined via the potentials), the number of connections present, and the number of spare cable connections are compared.

Arbitrary values can be predefined for the individual cables in the schematic. This way, for example, a cable type can already be entered on a cable in the schematic that is not here in the settings. A cable will then be selected which corresponds to the cable type entered and has a suitable number of connections. A missing cross-section is then taken from the defaults depending on the voltage. The same values are used as for manual cable selection.

  • Manufacturer: A particular manufacturer can be specified here. If there is no information on the manufacturer, the first one to be found will be taken for cable selection.
  • PE conductors: In this field, you can specify how many PE / PEN conductors (0, 1, or 2) the cable type has. This will be taken into consideration when determining the number of connections. If the cable has no PE / PEN conductors and there is no cable in the corresponding voltage range without PE / PEN conductors in parts management, then a cable with PE / PEN conductors will be taken. The PE / PEN conductor is added to the number of connections needed.
  • Number of connections: In this field, you can specify the total number of cable connections available. Several values can be entered separated by commas. This means that you do not have to add a separate line for each single number of connections, if the cable type is the same, but the number of connections varies.
In the Number of connections group box, you can enter additional information about reserve cable connections.
  • Voltage in volt: In this field, you can specify the maximum voltage for which the cable can be used. If the field is blank, this corresponds to a value of "infinite", that is, an arbitrarily high voltage.
If a voltage value is specified for the cable in the schematic, then the cable with the smallest appropriate voltage value will be searched for in cable selection.

Popup menu:

The popup menu provides - depending on the field type (e.g. date, integer, multilingual) - the following menu items that are, depending on the situation, available for influencing the table or editing the values in the fields. You can find an overview of these popup menu items in the section Popup menu items.

Number of connections group box

Minimum number of spare conductors:

In this field you enter the minimum number of connections to activate the value in the Spare field.

Spare:

Spare cable connections can automatically be specified for cables starting at a certain minimum number of connections. This way you can, for example, fulfill factory standards for different companies that require a certain percentage of spare cable connections for cabling. Specify here how many spare cable connections the cable should have.

Adjust default number of connections:

If this check box is selected, any specified number of connections is automatically adjusted. In this case, first the number of connections in the cable is calculated, then the specified number of spare cable connections is added to that and finally this is compared with the entered value. If the specified value is larger, this is accepted. Then the matching or next-biggest cable is used.

PE / PEN conductors are taken into consideration when calculating the number of connections, but not shields.

Transfer all values to components:

If this check box is selected, all values for the selected devices and templates are transferred to the corresponding fields of the components. Empty fields are filled with data in this case.

If the check box is not selected, the values for the selected devices and templates are only transferred to those fields of the components that already have values. The empty fields remain empty.
