Inserting Pins and Plug Definitions

Pins and plug definitions can be defined directly on insertion of the corresponding symbol into the schematic. In the plug navigator or the device navigator you can predefine pins and plug definitions with specific properties. You can then place functions created in this manner in the schematic at a later time. Plug definitions must be placed if you would like to copy them.

Tip:

If you already know during project planning which plug parts are to be used, you can insert the plugs directly as devices (menu items: Insert > Device). This allows the plug definition and the associated pins to be placed conveniently after each other. The function definition of the respective pin is displayed as a placement aid. You can use the [N] key to "browse" through the functions.

Insert pins

  1. Select the menu item Insert > Symbol.
  2. Select the desired pin in the Symbol selection dialog.
  3. Place the pin on the schematic page.
  4. In the Properties <...> dialog, enter the device data of the pin, e.g. the displayed DT, in the Pin tab.
  5. Click [OK].

If you give an already existing DT, the pin will be assigned to the corresponding plug.

If you specify a DT that does not yet exist then EPLAN generates a new plug. However, this doesn't have a plug definition yet.

Tip:

When you insert a pin, the identifier is displayed beside the symbol hanging on the cursor together with a question mark (e.g., "-X?") if there are no more pins in the DT adoption search direction. When you place the pin, a new plug is generated.
If there is already a pin in the DT adoption search direction, the identifier beside the symbol is hidden. If you place the pin there, it adopts the DT from the existing pin, and is thus assigned to the existing plug.

This behavior can be reversed by holding down the [Shift] key as you insert: If there is no pin in the DT adoption search direction, the pin is allocated to the last plug to be used. If there is a pin in the search direction, a new plug is generated.

Insert plug definitions

  1. Select the Insert > Plug definition menu items.
  2. Place the plug definition on the schematic page.
  3. In the Properties <...> dialog, enter the device data of the plug in the Plug definition tab.
  4. Click [OK].
